5 Skills Every Marketer Needs in 2022

In marketing, there are a million and one skills that every marketer should have under their belt, which is why it can sometimes be hard to know where to direct your focus when climbing the career ladder is on your mind. If you’re ambitious, hardworking and striving to constantly elevate your knowledge to stand out from the competition, mastering these 5 key skills, will help you become one of the best marketers in the business.

STRATEGY:

We live and breathe strategy here at Fabric and we firmly believe that without one, your marketing will be not only be a waste of precious money, but also time and energy too. If you’re looking to climb the career ladder, strategy development is a skill that every marketer needs. An integrated marketing strategy will outline the who, what, why, where and when of your creative ideas, and will give direction to any project, ensuring it is targeted and valuable each and every time.

Understanding why a strategy is important is just as crucial as building one – it will add credibility to your ideas ensuring you’ll receive the go ahead with confidence from your senior team and prove you’re ready for that next promotion.

RESEARCH:

You’ll need to be highly inquisitive if you want to become one of the best marketers in the industry. Ask questions, read everything and never settle for the basics. Input time for research into your daily schedule, this will help to improve and validate (or even disprove) your ideas. Looking at data, opinion pieces, reports, or asking people direct questions will all help you build on your learning, widen your skills and understand your customers.

ANALYTICS:

Analytics and data underpin all intelligent marketing activity. It’s how we can understand the success of our efforts, identify areas for improvement and make sure that all the work we do is rooted in factual insights. Analytics can be overwhelming to understand at first, but don't let them scare you - they’re about to become your best friend. There are countless analytics tools and platforms, such as Google Analytics, social media analytics integrated in the platforms themselves and third-party tools for analysis of competitors. Getting familiar with the language these platforms use and how to navigate them is crucial for your success.

WRITING:

There’s often a misconception when it comes to the belief that writing is a skill that only content marketers and copywriters need to master. But the reality is, no matter which area of marketing you’re in, you need to be able to write compelling content. From communicating with clients, pitching and strategy writing, to creating copy for socials, writing is one of your best weapons, so nailing it early on is always a great idea. Marketing is essentially storytelling after all, and no one ever gets invested in a badly written story.

SEO:

Often described as the ‘dark art’ of marketing, SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) influences all marketing that takes place online. Make sure that getting to grips with SEO is top of your priority list and learn how to integrate it into your strategy. Everything you can think of online from websites, blogs, social media and PR - SEO plays a huge role in getting your brand in front of the right people.
