This informal CPD article, ‘What role does AI play in L&D?’, was provided by iAM Learning, who are transforming the way your workforce trains and retains, using high-end animation, lovable characters and captivating stories to make even the most serious subjects appealing and unforgettable.
Introduction
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a hot topic in the Learning and Development world right now. And it’s clear to see why – AI is not only infiltrating many aspects of the office, with tools like Grammarly and Chat GPT in widespread use. And there’s also the ‘scare factor’ around AI. People are afraid of it, not in a ‘rise up and take over humanity’ type way, but a fear of being replaced.
But should you be afraid? Or should you embrace AI, knowing that it’ll likely enhance the content you can create in this sector? After all, AI is enhancing a wide range of industries, like research, medicine and even logistics. With many training and academic businesses already using AI, the scariest consideration should be getting left behind.
Top Roles
Let's look at some critical ways a Learning and Development Manager can make good use of AI:
1. Developing detailed insights: AI can be used for more tedious jobs, such as mining LMS data, collecting feedback or analytics. This data can then be used to refine content, identify areas of improvement, and create a top development strategy. And, what’s more, this can be done continually so that you can make informed decisions for your L&D policy.
2. Creating personalised learning: Using AI, you can scan employees' skills quickly. Often, employees have enough skills to skip basic training, and you can offer them something more advanced instead. It can be used to align content with employees' learning styles too, optimizing the experience for better results.
3. Automated grading and feedback: Why plough your own, limited time into things like employee assessment and feedback when AI can do the job quickly and more accurately? AI can create personalised assessments tailored to the learner and offer instant feedback so they can know how they’ve performed.
4. Translating: You’re likely already familiar with tools like Google Translate. Well, AI can do that job for you! Yes, AI can be used to translate your courses and resources into different languages, which makes them more accessible. Of course, that’s a real help when you’re trying to reach alternative markets with your content, too.
Summary
AI is here, and it’s going to continue to play a major part in Learning and Development jobs as it has in other sectors, whether you like it or not. But it’s nothing to fear. No one wants to read things written by a computer, so humans simply must stay in the equation. Creating a hybrid way of working is the key, as long as you’re transparent about its uses. Use AI to save time, but don’t let it replace the uniquely human flair that should be weaved throughout L&D. There’s a way to work cooperatively to ensure any copy you write is the best it can be.
